Fitment Factor Hike News: Central Govt Staff Could Enjoy 34% Salary Increase

A salary revision for central government employees along with a huge boost to their salaries is on the cards as the fitment factor revision is gaining momentum. If this hike comes into effect, it would help in relieving employees from inflation as their pay could be increased by up to 34%.

What Is Fitment Factor?

The fitment factor is one of the vital criteria in the calculation of the basic salary of all central government employees. It is a multiplier applied to the basic pay that an employee was drawing earlier from the last pay commission to arrive at the revised pay. At present, the fitment factor is 2.57, which effectively means multiplying an employee’s old basic pay by 2.57 to arrive at the revised salary.

Accepted Proposal For Increasing The Fitment Factor

Duly on behalf of union leaders, trade nunions have strongly demanded the increase of the fitment factor to 3.68, which will mark some big jumps in pay scales. For instance, a worker with a basic salary of ₹18,000 might have his wage increased to almost ₹26,000 per month with the hike leading to 34% increase in pay, significantly bettering the take-home salary.

Impact On Central Govt Employees

If the increments are approved, that would mean a positive impact on more than 47 lakh central government employees and 68 lakh pensioners. Besides raising the salary, an increase also raises allowances such as HRA and DA because these allowances are calculated on the basis of the basic pay. Pensioners will also see a big increase in their monthly pensions.

Government’s Stand On The Proposal

Although nothing has been confirmed officially, there are reports that the government is giving the demand due consideration. Timing will be important as it may be tied up with the 8th Pay Commission recommendations sometime around the corner. Politically, if implemented, the hike will also bring relief to millions of families.
